While there once was a stigma around buying used clothes, we can now collectively celebrate how far we’ve come by bringing secondhand shopping to the mainstream on August 25th: National Secondhand Wardrobe Day. It’s a time for shoppers to choose used over new for the many reasons we love thrifting – buying a unique piece at a fraction of the cost and reducing your carbon footprint in the process. This is what makes buying secondhand a real *treet.
It’s also a time for the brands that have embraced resale to celebrate the steps they’ve taken to encourage their customers to buy their used items. If you count yourself as one of these pioneering brands, here’s how to make sure to get the most out of National Secondhand Wardrobe Day:
Share your why - In the days and weeks leading up to the Holiday, share your perspective on why you decided to embrace resale. Many Treet partners have leveraged Instagram stories effectively to share stats on resale’s ability to lower carbon emissions and landfill waste.
Offer an incentive for listings - Add an abundance of new inventory to your resale shop by increasing your credit amount for sellers who post an item. For instance, during the month of August or the week leading up to the 25th, for anyone who lists an item for sale, increase the credit they’ll receive when it sells by 10-20%.
Showcase in your newsletter - Add a footer section to your newsletter during the month of August showcasing National Secondhand Wardrobe day and sharing whatever promotion or piece of content you’ve created.
Add to your Brand Direct listings - In honor of the Holiday, rummage through your returned, damaged, and off-price listings to infuse your site with even more inventory for secondhand enthusiasts to shop. Share this journey with your community to increase sell-through of these items.
Feature on your homepage - On August 25th, consider directing shoppers to your resale experience by adding a banner to the top of your site.
Redirect your traffic - Bonus points if you redirect your site traffic to your resale site on the 25th and make a pledge for shoppers to purchase “no new things.”
